Our community in (climate) action
All around the world communities are coming together to build and fight for a sustainable and resilient future for our children. Here in the Blue Mountains we are a community who are passionately devoted to this cause.
We put out a call to our community to find out what climate action people are taking that they are proud of and what they feel they could do better with, these are the stories that have been shared so far.
We'd love to hear your story too.
You can read about what these members of your community are doing by selecting photos.

Susan Templeman MP - Federal Member for Macquarie
“I’m really proud of the water recycling that I’m doing. Every morning with a bucket in the shower to help water my pot plants. And in our garden, putting in a drip system that’s using so much less water than we used to.
“What we need to do better in our family is link our solar panels onto a battery, so that we can really store more energy, rather than just relying on it when the sun’s shining.”

What climate action are you taking that you are proud of?
I am diligent about offsetting the emissions from my car, next car will be electric, lots of public transport and walking and always offset flights. Decarbonising our transport is key!
What do you wish you were doing better?
very little food waste and strive to buy local but so much plastic. Not all recyclable as well.

I'm using my skills as a science journalist to communicate the urgency of the climate emergency, to explore solutions to the carbon problem, and to paint a positive picture of what a carbon-zero world looks like and how we get there.
What do you wish you were doing better?
I wish I used my car less. I try to walk, bicycle and use public transport as much as possible, but I know it isn't enough. I wish we had better low-carbon-transport infrastructure in Australia, so I had other options to get around.

I really wanted a nice selfie on my beloved bike but the chain fell off last Friday so a walking selfie is kinda boring.
However, I was really proud of continuing to cycle through the depths of winter here in Oslo. It was a learning curve - my bike lock froze and I struggled on a few occasions. But the local council here did a subsidy scheme for studded bike tyres and I powered through! Here's a photo of my poor bike, pre-ride.
What I need to do better: I use gadgets heavily in my work and play. Computers, phones, etc. I've gotten better but still not sweating my tech for as long as I could be - tech that takes materials, mining, and emissions to make and transport. Here's a pic of my old laptop, with a rapidly expanding and very dangerous battery, that I finally will be getting a replacement for tomorrow!

Lesley Christen
Lesley has been using her plastic drink flask and straw for her daily iced coffee, for over a year.
Alan’s proud that he rescued the flask from the bin when a carer threw it out - and wrote “KEEP” on it!

One thing I’ve done is installing solar panels on my roof. Anything to hasten the fast transition away from fossil fuels.
We all need to do better on Climate Change Actions! We can support local groups taking action or environment groups, make sure our vote counts in every election at every level of government. Let’s do this for our kids and grandkids …. and for the planet and nature!

What I am proud of:
I have found my Climate Emergency voice and become active in raising awareness of the crisis we face. I wave banners, attend rallies and have uncomfortable conversations with friends. This is me doing at Mechanics Institue Lawson doing banner waving Covid style..
What I wish I could do better:
Food packaging - I don't live near a co-op and find it very hard to avoid food packaging, especially for basics like rice, pasta, tinned food.

I have decided that 2021 is my very own International Year of the Outcome. So everyday I work on Climate Action - either recovery or prevention or both. This week's activities so far include working on a micro-action supporting Extinction Rebellion Blue Mountains' greenwashing gas action by setting up this webpage www.headsupnot.info. The campaign I set up changes to support actions every month or two. Yesterday and tomorrow I will spend time helping wildlife recovery pouch making by Blue ARC and today I did some guerrilla weeding with friends (cutting off the seed heads) where the native plants are fighting to recover from the devastating fires at Narrow Neck. And then I helped a community movement trying to replace Angus Taylor MP with a climate truth candidate.
What do you know you need to do better?
Grow pathways for more local people to join in the daily fight for Planet A in my local community.

My son is engaged and interested in the bush. He participates in bush care, bush walking and permaculture. The photo I am sharing is by my son on a solo bushwalk.
What do you know you need to do better?
Reducing my carbon footprint further.

I stopped to buy plastic bags every time that I went to the supermarket.
I teach kids why is so important to recycle and take care of our natural places.
What do you know you need to do better?
Be more aware when I use water for home purposes.

Our family made the decision earlier this year to stop eating meat and dairy products. We support regenerative farming also, but the opportunity to significantly cut our household emissions by switching to a plant-based diet was too good to pass up.
What do you know you need to do better?
Recycling our soft plastics! It's time to bite the bullet and collect and recycle these - at the moment the only place we can do that is at Coles and Woolworths, places we normally don't shop. (Pleased to say we can now drive there using zero emissions as we recently bought an electric vehicle.)
